How to access FreeBSD Discord Server?

Now some hour later an email arrived.

Someone tried to log into your Discord account from a new location. If this is
+you, click the link below to authorize the log in.

< More than SIXHUNDRED characters in total!! >

Now when I click on this link (in the xterm with the mailreader), nothing happens. (Which is obvious to me, but apparently not to whoever wrote this mail.)

Then when I copy the link to the browser, it shows this:

Wrong Link

You have clicked on an invalid link. Please make sure that you have typed the link correctly. If are copying this link from a mail reader please ensure that you have copied all the lines in the link.

And I certainly have copied all the lines.

So what is apparently expected from me is to call the neighbour over and have him read all these sixhundred characters to me literally while I type them into the browser.

Well, it is publicly searchable using the discord app.

And what does that mean?

In order to use an "app" one usually needs to buy a smartphone that is owned by Google or Apple, for the only purpose that these can sniff out all your movements. What good does that do (except for them)?

After finally copying all these sixhundred characters, we get this message:

Hmmm. It worked for me, but that was some time ago and I can't re-test since I'm already in.

I posted a message about this inside the discord. Let's see.

I can't help but consider the complaint bogus. If there is an issue it's with OP's local setup, not the wiki nor the links.

My client is on Windows and I don't really use Discord all that often (do have it running in the background). So I click on the link... and the next moment I'm there. Seems people even recognized my nick/avatar ;)

Well. I still think there should be a reliable way to join the FreeBSD discord, no?
I don't disagree, but also fail to understand what's unreliable here.

Still, it would be nice if the site could focus on more parts of the community than merely the forum & mailinglists. Maybe a mention of (unofficial) online communities? Because I can definitely see people enjoying those. While I'm not very active on Discord I enjoy following the FreeBSD subreddit for example.

It seems to have worked. There was a captcha several times - I passed it, then email verification. Same thing. Two letters came into the mailbox - verification by mailbox and welcome. I'm already too old for such things, but we'll see...

Using second link, I ended in discord, but nothing about FreeBSD to be seen. I have account, because I needed access to one thread abou XCPng netdata thread. That also sums my knowledge of this platform. No captcha, no e-mail verification. Clicked add server on left, added link from first OPs' link and it seems working for me.

You're not missing much if you can't get in, it seems to be mostly populated by prepubescent males sharing cat memes or going wildly off-topic, it's far better here. As a more senior person, I'm not the target demographic I feel.

Part of such problem solving is understanding what might be going wrong for someone else.

I’m probably older than you. i’ve found the few channels I sample quite helpful.

Then what might be that issue?

See, I don't have a client or a Windows. I have the standard Firefox web browser provided as FreeBSD port, nothing else.
I switched to FreeBSD in 1995, entirely, and there was no Windows back then, I never touched Windows and don't know how to use it.

Me too. But I think it is a generally disappointing experience when one follows the provided link, gets neverending capthas, gets no login, gets then an e-mail with a monstrosity of an URL that needs to be loaded into some browser
to be used, disregarding the most basic safety measures (we know approximately 100 percent of all the crime on the Internet -Scum, Scam, Ransomware, you name it- happens by means of the victim reading their e-mail in a browser), and then by the time of reception that e-mail is "expired" (e-mail is not synchronous, there is no defined delivery timeframe).

I didn't get a Welcome. Have You signed up as new?

I already had an account, so this was supposed to be just the regular login.

Did you try any other browser, e.g. Chromium?
No. I think I found the issue now, they start that harrassment when the provider changes or the IP address changes or the geolocation info changes, or something along that line.
And then they send email that expire after apparently 60 seconds. :(

Over all, I think RypPn somehow hits the point here: this does not only describe the typical users, but also the skill-level of those who built that discord.

Then also, RypPn is right, I might not get very happy with the content there. But that was not actually my intent - I'm on pursuit of something very much different.
Corrollary: Yesterday I recognized there is no longer a place on the network where I could ask difficult questions which are not computer-related. Lets say, I just cannot ask you guys here about Reiki, and the relationship with Roger Zelazny 'He Who Shapes' (okay, maybe some here know the latter). Yes, you get it, this is rather about hacking the human mind, and seriousely so.
Twenty years ago there were discussion groups where one could talk about such topics. Now at least here in Germany they have all dried out, for a long time already. And I am wondering where the people have gone. Sure, they got older, but then there might be young people appearing also - and where would these then go?

So today, when I accidentially opened the community page and found that discord link, I thought, I already have an account for that one, I might just have a quick look-around what there is and what there might be.
What I apparently didn't consider is that these younger people all use smartphones and give a damn about professional IT operations or safety. :(

You should have mentioned this in the OP. Context is key in trouble solving. And not started with waving accusations.

I mean... if you never used Steam, never installed it, yet suddenly followed a link towards a community then stuff could happen. Not a fault of the link of those who shared it, but rather the implementation of the whole thing.

I'm tempted to follow up to see for myself but ... not sure.

If I remember correctly, Discord uses Cloudflare for their robots/AI defense. And from my experience, "sometimes" (read: pretty often) Cloudflare's captcha has problems to work correctly in anything than Chrome (even Chromium). If the invitation's links don't work for you, due to endless captcha's loop, try:

1. Change a browser to another. Just keeping another browser just for Discord could be a bit overkill.
2. Change your browser's user-agent. Sometimes it helps.
3. Here are also some unofficial clients for Discord too in ports: net-im/dissent for example.
