Why did you stopped using FreeBSD ?

Not the idea of starting a flame-war.
I program mostly in F# and Scala.
But no good editor like vscode(plugin) or idea or rider available.
Currently using artix-linux , redcore-linux , mx-linux.

Honestly, seeing such a topic is quite strange to me!
The editors you mentioned, do they perform miracles? It’s you who implements your thoughts and ideas. What importance does the editor have?

VSCode is less than 10 years old; how did you code before that? These editors have many extra features that can be quite cumbersome. Build your own editor based on your needs.

The only relatively essential feature for editors is syntax highlighting, which makes reading texts easier.

The off-topic section doesn't surprise me anymore TBH (^_^)

Not supported hardware is the most common reason ...
I've came across a blog post where the user (not a new guy) is just enjoying better how "containers" and virtualization are handle in his new OS (Illumos).
Basically the lack of automation and builtin tools were the factors that made him switch.

I find it very strange to give up on an important thing (OS) because of a minor thing (editor). Software engineers typically spend a relatively small fraction of their time actually editing code; the bulk is spent designing, testing, meeting with people, reading and writing documentation, and so on. I would think that using vi or emacs would change your productivity only by an infinitesimal amount.

But then, to each their own! If using a particular editor is important for your well-being, go for it.

Currently using artix-linux , redcore-linux , mx-linux.
Which one is it? I think you're not actually using Linux, your are distro hopping. I wonder whether you spend more time installing and configuring OSes than actually coding in them and using the editor.

I like freebsd & zfs & jails. But editors are essential.
I disagree. A storage backend that actually preserves the files you have edited is essential. For editors, there are many good alternatives. But then, ZFS is also available on Linux.

I stopped using FreeBSD because it does not run properly on my hardware. (RPI5 ...
Same here, on Raspberry Pi's. It ran, but not "properly", in the sense that configuring things (like GPIO, 1-wire, I2C, ...) all required lots of work, and on Linux it's at worst editing one config file and rebooting.

So sad. I am forced to use Lin*x. This sucks.
Linux does not suck. It is a perfectly fine and usable operating system. The fact that it run on upwards of 90% of all "computers" in the world (including servers, VMs and handheld devices) tells you something about the absence of sucking. There are some design decisions that some people really dislike (all I need to say is "systemd"), but there are also lots of good things about it. I use it on all RPi in my house, and on oodles of machines at $JOB. I still prefer FreeBSD where that choice is sensible, such as my home server.

Could you install your favourite linux code editor using the linuxulator ?
Or your favourite windoze code editor using wine ?

I started using FreeBSD last June and never stopped, I just regret not having switched from Linux earlier basically because of fear of lack of hardware support. There are a couple of things that don't work well but nothing that can make me think of switching back.

The question is why we are not seeing ready package to download and use with full add-ons and features for FreeBSD? Visual Studio is one little example.

That can also be said about Linux, Mac, Windows...
By now there is nothing that works well on everything for everybody. And I highly doubt it ever will.
If someone observes him- or herself on 'platform hopping' maybe it's because of her or his premises are not specified, yet.

This reddit-like thread reminds me of the time a friend of mine showed me a thread on the FreeBSD reddit sub itself where half the posters mentioned that they don't use FreeBSD. Another time, on my city's reddit sub, something happened locally and most of the posters mentioned they don't even live in my city.

Reason #9764 why I never go to reddit for anything.

I have had good answers to programming questions.
