Audio interface and DAW for sound recording

… I would use it for recording electric guitar, bass, and maybe some vocals.

Has anyone here practical experience with this on FreeBSD and could recommend a nice gadget?

If yes, what DAW do you use? Does, e.g., audio/ardour work well on FreeBSD or should I jump into the linuxulator world?

Thanks!

I use a Harrison 32 Ci interface. Works well in FreeBSD, with all channels. Two premium microphone preamps, very strong headphone amp.

I did not try DAWs in the Linuxulator. The Windows version in Wine probably has an equal chance to work.

If you got that kinda money for a toy than you will get bled out.

By musical instrument standards this thing isn't all that expensive. The best direct competitor is the Neve 88m which costs $1250 (plus tax).

Of course you can get a $200 Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2x2 which has "normal" preamps and no ADAT in. I have a 3rd gen one but I don't remember whether I tested it in FreeBSD. I know that the headphone out isn't as good as the Harrison.

What advantage do newer USB Audio Interfaces bring you?? 192 versus 48khz?

In general good A/D and D/A converters have become cheaper, respectively the cheaper units can now perform well. That didn't use to be the case and spending thousands on audio cards or interfaces was the norm.

The sample rate is of course useless, but 24 bits is not.
