I knew that Intel had sold off its SSD business to SK hynix, but didn't know that the Optane business is being written off with a half billion dollar impairment. Ouch!

Another bad idea that was hyped up way too much goes the way it deserves.

3D XPoint technology had Intel Optane as its sole implementation. I'd say, 3D XPoint was a good idea (yes, hyped) at its inception; unfortunately it didn't scale and therefore became an increasing less attractive idea as a solution for low latency, highly durable persistant memory (Intel Optane $559M Impairment with Q2 2022 Wind-Down).

I liked the *idea* of Optane, but not the price. Too bad they couldn't iterate and bring down the costs.
