Solved USB Keyboard detected but not working in console (used to work!)

Hello,

I’ve just discovered that my keyboard is no longer working on my FreeBSD PC (14.2-RELEASE). The problem occurs in the console

Keyboard + mouse + yubikey + USB sound-card are plugged on a USB switch.
The switch allows me to pass USB devices to a Mac, a Win PC, a Linux PC and a FreeBSD PC.

Until recently it worked great (and it has been working great for years). And suddenly, only on the FreeBSD PC, the keyboard does not work any longer.
Last time I checked was the 5th of January. No OS changes between the 5th of January and now, I’ve only installed graphviz and related Perl modules.

A reboot does not help and the Yubikey on the same USB switch can send keystrokes to the console.

Any idea?
 
Alright, here’s the deal: your keyboard’s acting up because FreeBSD is probably picking the wrong ukbd device as the default. You’ve got multiple keyboards showing up, and that can confuse the system.

First, check what keyboard’s active:

kbdcontrol -k<br>

If it’s not set to the correct one (like /dev/kbd4), fix it with:
kbdcontrol -k /dev/kbd4<br>
Now, ditch the USB switch for a sec. Plug the keyboard directly into the FreeBSD box. Switches sometimes mess things up, so eliminate that as a factor.

If it’s still being stubborn, unplug all the extra devices like the Yubikey and sound card. Then, replug the keyboard and see if it plays nice.
Still nothing? Look at system logs while you plug it in:
tail -f /var/log/messages<br>
See if there’s an error or clue there.
If none of that works, you’ve got a config or driver issue. Update FreeBSD or test a live USB to rule out hardware. Keep it simple and strip things down to just the basics to find the culprit.
 
As strange as it looks, the problem seems to be with the hardware. I’ll have to do more tests, but I’ve just discovered the keyboard no longer work in the BIOS, I’ve also tried every USB ports, and plugged the keyboard directly on the PC. Other keyboards are working on this PC, the problematic keyboard works on every other computer I have…

Really odd but not a FreeBSD problem. I’ll mark as «Solved».
