Trying to run KDE 6 Plasma with Wayland....

Hello bro.

I want to try to run Wayland + KDE 6 plasma. I have assembled the following commands that brought me close to the goal achievement,I think :

Code:
==> pkg install bash
==> pw groupmod video -m marietto
==> pkg install noto-2.0 sudo
==> EDITOR=nano visudo

%wheel ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL
%sudo   ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL

==> nano /etc/fstab

proc            /proc                   procfs          rw              0       0

==> mount -a

==> pkg install plasma6-plasma kde6-devel
==> pkg install --glob "plasma6-*"
==> pkg install --glob "kf6-*"
==> pkg install --glob "qt6-*"
==> sysrc dbus_enable="YES"
==> sysrc seatd_enable="YES"
==> sysrc -f /etc/rc.conf kld_list+="nvidia-modeset nvidia-drm linux linux64 i915kms ext2fs mac_priority"
==> sysctl net.local.stream.recvspace=65536
==> sysctl net.local.stream.sendspace=65536

==> pkg install seatd nvidia-driver nvidia-settings nvidia-drm-kmod libva-intel-driver libva-utils linux-nvidia-libs libc6-shim libvdpau-va-gl libva-nvidia-driver xdg-desktop-portal-wlr wlrobs grim slurp wlr-which-key wayland-protocols wayfire wf-shell wayfire-plugins-extra

nano start.sh :

#!/usr/local/bin/bash

export MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1
export __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1
export __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia
export XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland
export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/$USER/.xdg
export CLUTTER_BACKEND=wayland
export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland
export LIBGL_DRI3_ENABLE=1
export XKB_DEFAULT_RULES=evdev
export QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland-egl
export QT_WAYLAND_DISABLE_WINDOWDECORATION=1
export BEMENU_BACKEND=wayland
export WLR_DRM_NO_ATOMIC=1
export XCURSOR_THEME=whiteglass
#export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct
export WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1

[ -d $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR ] || mkdir -m 700 -p $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR

WM=startplasma-wayland
exec dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session startplasma-wayland

but I get the following errors :

IMG_20240626_163700.jpg

IMG_20240626_163735.jpg

IMG_20240626_163747.jpg

I get the same error with this startup script :

Code:
#!/usr/local/bin/bash

export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/$USER/.xdg
export WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1

[ -d $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR ] || mkdir -m 700 -p $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR

WM=startplasma-wayland
exec dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session startplasma-wayland

So. It does not work,but it seems to me that there are some missing / wrong parameters,but I don't see errors caused by some kind of bug.

1 - add your user to the wheel and video groups

Code:
sudo pw groupmod wheel video -m marietto

2 - set up the xdg runtime directory

dont create the xdg runtime directory in /tmp

Code:
sudo mkdir -p /var/run/user/"$(id -u)"
sudo chown -R "${USER}":wheel /var/run/user/"$(id -u)"
sudo chmod 700 /var/run/user/"$(id -u)"

if you have clear_tmp_enable in your /etc/rc.conf
then it will delete the xdg runtime dir in /tmp every time you reboot

Code:
clear_tmp_enable="YES"

3 - sysrc

you dont need ext2fs and mac_priority
ext2fs is for mounting linux drives and mac_priority is for realtime audio for things like jack

Code:
sudo sysrc -f /etc/rc.conf kld_list+="nvidia-modeset nvidia-drm linux linux64 i915kms"

4- bash shell export the XDG directories

if you are using bash add the following code to your ~/.profile

Code:
~/.profile

Code:
export XDG_CONFIG_HOME="$HOME/.config"
export XDG_CACHE_HOME="$HOME/.cache"
export XDG_DATA_HOME="$HOME/.local/share"
export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR="/var/run/user/`id -u`"

dont export these settings you used

Code:
export MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1
export __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1
export __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia
export XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland
export CLUTTER_BACKEND=wayland
export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland

dont install these packages

Code:
xdg-desktop-portal-wlr wlrobs grim slurp wlr-which-key wayland-protocols wayfire wf-shell wayfire-plugins-extra

xdg-desktop-portal-wlr wlrobs grim slurp wlr-which-key are all for wlroots wayland compositors
kde doesnt use wlroots

wayfire wf-shell wayfire-plugins-extra are for wayfire

5- plasma wayland protocols

you probably need to install plasma-wayland-protocols instead of wayland-protocols

Code:
plasma-wayland-protocols-1.12.0 Plasma Specific Protocols for Wayland

install plasma-wayland-protocols

Code:
sudo pkg install plasma-wayland-protocols

6 - xdg-desktop-portal

install plasma6-xdg-desktop-portal-kde

Code:
plasma6-xdg-desktop-portal-kde-6.0.4 Backend implementation for xdg-desktop-portal that is using Qt/KDE

Code:
plasma6-xdg-desktop-portal-kde

7 - startup script

create a startup script called something like start-kde6

Code:
#!/bin/sh

exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session ck-launch-session startplasma-wayland

chmod

Code:
chmod +x ./start-kde6

move to /usr/local/bin

Code:
sudo mv start-kde6 /usr/local/bin

8 - icon set

i think you need the breeze icon set installed

Code:
sudo pkg install kf6-breeze-icons-6

9 - kde6-devel

kde6-devel should also install plasma6-plasma

9 - reboot

reboot and try and run the startup script

Code:
start-kde6

note

installing packages with glob

i see you are using glob to install loads of packages

Code:
==> pkg install --glob "plasma6-*"
==> pkg install --glob "kf6-*"

its probably better to just install kde6-devel
and then figure out what other packages you might need to install one by one

Code:
sudo pkg install --glob "plasma6-*

would install all these packages

Code:

It does not work. It displays a lot of error messages on the screen that I tried to capture / write on a log file with this command :

Code:
./start-kde6 > log

but inside the log file I didn't see any message.

Note :

start-kde6 is this one :
Code:
#!/bin/sh

exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session ck-launch-session startplasma-wayland

try just typing out the command instead of using the script

use 2> error.log to send standard error to a log file

Code:
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session ck-launch-session startplasma-wayland 2> error.log

Unfortunately I've already tried asking google and I've asked in a lot of forums (including some FreeBSD MLs). No one replied,that just mean that no one fully understand how to fix them. Me neither. I can try something,but its a mess and probably I will give up. But does it work for you ?

9 - kde6-devel

kde6-devel should also install plasma6-plasma

Moin moin

Note, the future ports tree [1] will have x11/kde, which will have this dependency. The current state in the tree is somewhat broken as it is favoring a Plasma5 desktop and its dependencies. Wayland will also make issues still in the tree found in [1], but you might have less tweaking to do.

Detected locale "C" with character encoding "US-ASCII", which is not UTF-8.
Qt depends on a UTF-8 locale, and has switched to "C.UTF-8" instead.

have you set your locale

Ok,I've setup my locale following this tutorial :

doing :

Code:
# nano /etc/login.conf

italian|Italian Users Accounts:\
:charset=UTF-8:\
:lang=it_IT.UTF-8:\
:tc=default

# cap_mkdb /etc/login.conf
# pw usermod marietto -L italian

Set locale in Shell startup file.

Code:
# nano /etc/profile

export LANG=it_IT.UTF-8
export MM_CHARSET=UTF-8

nano /etc/csh.login

setenv LANG it_IT.UTF-8
setenv MM_CHARSET UTF-8

But the errors are still the same as before.

I've reported a bug :

it is referred to this error :

are you still using this

Code:
export WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1

WLR would suggest its for wlroots and not kde
that might be the issue

No,this is not the issue. I've conducted experiments and I've added it but the problem didn't go away..on the bug ticket there are some good suggestions.

At this point I think that I / we should make a step back,trying to configure kde plasma 5 and wayland,instead of Kde plasma 6.

FYI:
I invested a lot of time but never got kde to work under Wayland. Neither version 5 nor 6.
So maybe it required fixes ?

i tried kde on wayland on linux, i didnt like it

kde seemed more like a framework than a desktop
lots of packages that all need to work together any of which could break

too many moving parts

KDE is great because is modular. What you are talking about should not be seen as a weakness,but as a point of strength.
