Having installed FreeBSD-12.0 in a Parallels virtual machine on a 2018 Mac mini running Mojave 10.14.4, the screen resolution defaulted to 1024x768 which was less than ideal on a 24" monitor which does 1920x1080.
After searching for hints I came across suggestions to use:
mode X
gop set X
efi_max_resolution="XxY"
in /boot/loader.conf.local.
To check the modes available, at the boot loader prompt
That something turned out to be
None of this seems to be documented anywhere official (eg man page for loader.conf) so I might have to lodge a doc PR.

. This showed 10 possible modes the closest to 1920x1080 being mode 10 which was 1920x1200. This can be set at the loader prompt with gop set 10
. However, to have it set permanently one needs to add something to /boot/loader.conf.local.That something turned out to be
efi_max_resolution="1920x1200"
