[Poudriere] : out of memory

Hi all,

I'm trying to build i386:wine-devel
9.3.
Nevertheless, poudriere bulk -j wine-build emulators/wine-devel runs out of memory (linkage process indeed) when build gcc-13 and llvm-15.

My hardware : 9 Go RAM + 12 Go swap.

Anyone has an idea to workaround this ?

Note: Building
amd64:wine-devel 9.3 and subsequently amd64:gcc-13 and amd64:llvm-15 from regular ports triggers no trouble.

2 cores / 4 threads (i5 650).
I've tried with a single core with 9 Go RAM + 4 Go swap. Same result.

While build of gcc-13 has failed, llvm-15 could succeed; it's in progress. I pray.

Hm. The LLVM build should be much bigger than the gcc build, especially the linking stage.

After seeing chromium fail to build for i386 because the linker step can't be done within the bounds of the 4Gib virtual address space on i386 -- maybe LTO bumps memory usage up that far here as well?

Yeah, that one is actually out of virtual address space, not physical memory.

Are you on a pure i386 installation?

If you have a i386 chroot on an amd64 OS you get an extra GB of virtual address space.

I've just typed this set of commands :

# poudriere ports -c
# poudriere jail -c -j wine-build -a i386 -v 10.3-RELEASE
# echo "WINE_CROSS_BUILD=yes" >> /usr/local/etc/poudriere.d/make.conf
# poudriere bulk -j wine-build emulators/i386-wine


Do you have extra debugging turned on in LLVM compilation?

I haven't done such a tuning.

Hm. I have seen that LLVM linker processes are going up to 4 GB resident, with DEBUG build on. But non-debug builds are nowhere close. And gcc should be harmless.
