I seem to recall kde depending on mysql, but my notes on this are ancient and I'm not using kde. But, my question is, is there a preference for one over the other in FreeBSD? I don't have a personal preference.
The default is set to MySQL 8.0. So if you plan on using the FreeBSD package repositories you're more or less stuck with that. If you build your own repository you can set it to use MariaDB as the default. I've made that switch when MySQL was stuck on 5.5 for a long time (during the Oracle take-over debacle). It's mostly the same, usage-wise. Most applications that need a MySQL database will function correctly on MariaDB.
