wired memory

is it normal for a ZFS to use a large amount of wired memory and took a while before it releases it?

So earlier I ran top -CSHIi to see where things were at, and memory was something like 500 MB free, and 11 G of "wired" memory... What's that? Then I exited out of everything to the point where I was just logged-in with the root account on one terminal running sh, and nothing else but normal...
