Hello,
I installed FreeBSD 14.1 on my old laptop. Laptop specs:
I used the intel i915 board in the installation. I used the vesa setting because it boots from the bios.
I installed Xfce as desktop, when I rebooted the screen was unreadable with resolution and color errors.
What is my problem...
After a gap of almost 5 years, I came back to my favourite OS. Yesterday, I downloaded, and installed 13.2 stable version on my desktop.
I installed it alongside Windows, on a 50g partition with traditional split file system partitions (per this chapter in handbook)
-freebsd-ufs 2GB /...
Today when I booted and logged in and ran "startxfce4", I got a broken XFCE desktop session, where windows had no borders or titles, no keyboard focus, etc.
This kind of problem was known to me, and can otherwise be reproduced, by eg. setting the LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH environment variable to the...
I am using fish. And I have a simple desktop installed.
I have edited the .log file, wishing the startx will be executed automatically when to login.
But it is not. Anything I missed here?
I want to give FreeBSD another chance. I've used FreeBSD as a desktop a little bit for about a year. But I am a complete noob and need the help of The FreeBSD Forums once again if I am to use it as my primary desktop.
See these two blog posts I made about how I installed FreeBSD (with the...
I'm trying to get KDE up and running on FreeBSD 13 on a laptop PC.
I could not even configure Xorg to run and it seems like the hardware cannot be recognized.
So, I downloaded GhostBSD (both the default MATE and Xfce versions) and it works out of the box. I am now trying to figure out what...
Since I have just received the following feedback from upstream concerning the addition of a PPD + patch to rastertolabel.c to CUPS:
and LPrint - A Label Printer Application not being available as a FreeBSD port yet, I'd like to ask if anyone is willing and able to have a look, as that would...
I'm curious because it's a pretty unique combination with Wayland on FreeBSD. I've taken a look from time to time but never tried it myself (and I have to admit that I'm not even running FreeBSD yet, because I wanted to wait for "13" to give it a first spin on my new laptop).
For me the...
Hi,
I tried for many days to install a desktop environment on FreeBsd but it's unsuccessful on a laptop.
This is a Dell 7240 with a i5-4300U ( Haswell serie) with a UK keyboard.
I have 2 ssd's, both booting on UEFI: One with W10 installed and the other with FreeBSD. There is no dual boot, I...
I took the chance of wiping out the Linux on my laptop and install FreeBSD I was able to install and even got my Wi-Fi network working. I don't regret my decision.
However, I am unable to get the gnome Desktop Environment to start. I followed the Handbook instructions.
Here is something that I...

P/S: I using freeBSD 11.3-STABLE, And i use pfsense image. And pfsense is based on freeBSD. Then pffsense auto install freeBSD for me...
That sentence caught my eye in the blog post Announcing the release of sway 1.0 by Drew DeVault, because I could not find any further information, tutorial or blog posts about installing, configuring and using Sway on FreeBSD.
Everything including the especially created tools (except one) is...
I'm trying to install a desktop environment in one account that isn't root. But I can't. It says that the user doesn't appear in the "sudoers" file. Give me a moment and I'll give you the specific output.
I have been pondering for a while now which desktop environment FreeBSD users consider the best choice for today and in the future. It looks as though desktop environments created primarily for Linux such as Gnome and KDE may become more difficult, if not impossible to keep up to date for...
I tried both install Cinnamon from as binary from the pkgs and build it from ports, added the rc exec cinnamon session in .xinitrc and enabled the dbus, hald and slim. Yet once I login it gives me a message cinnamon crashed and if I want to try again and keep crashing..
I am using the port...
Hi,
I was using x11/mate as my desktop manager and recently decided to install x11/gnome3. There are some issues I have been struggling with;
1 ) GNOME insists using x11-fm/caja instead of x11-fm/nautilus as the main file manager
2 ) x11-fm/nautilus uses large icons, that I don't like. When I...
Okay, so I installed FreeBSD on another machine and installed all need software (driver, DE, etc) but I am getting low resolution when booting it, is 640x480, my machine can support higher one also I don't have the option to increase it.

Is there any general plan or some general ideas about future of FreeBSD for desktop use?
What developers think about the future of FreeBSD as desktop OS? What is their future vision of FreeBSD for desktop use?
Is the desktop part important part of development of FreeBSD?
Sorry, wasn't sure if this should go in "X.Org" or "Window Managers" forum.
Recently I was trying to get the Logout/Shutdown dialog in Cinnamon to work correctly. After logging out into XDM via the dialog, Cinnamon immediately crashed after trying to log back in. The desktop background...
