My longterm home server (a HP Microserver Gen 7) runs FBSD on a ZFS raid-z2 since installation about 10 years ago. Did all the major and minor updates without major problems (except the one time it didn't boot from ZFS after an upgrade).
Now I did the upgrade 13.2->14.0. Worked fine. I'm using...

By this time it should be already old news that /bin/sh has become the new default shell instead of /bin/csh. But perhaps more subtle is that this new version of Bourne Shell has expanded support for the formatting sequences supported by the PS1 special variable as can...

My starting point is: Installing FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE on Dell OptiPlex Micro (GPT+ZFS on NVMe SSD) and proceed similarly as I've done for Intel UHD Graphics 630 on FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE, but this time the problem is to make a good use of an Intel UHD Graphics 730 which...

My starting point is: Installing FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE on Dell Vostro (GPT+ZFS on SSD). Next I set to get X11 running on it as well so I perform the usual pkg install xorg and add user to the video group. But before launching X for the very first time it's probably...

Hi all!
This week I tried to upgrade to 14.0-RELEASE from 13.2p5 but I failed. I ran into an zfs error while running freebsd-update upgrade and merging all the config changes.
I have many datasets that are used as disks for vms.
The upgrade fails with the following error:

Why should kernel be corrupted as soon as I edit loader conf or restore backup via cp *conf in /etc/ and /usr/local/etc.
Once I do any of these, freebsd-version -kur reports 'unable to locate kernel'. Then I have to do fresh install again; custom build won't fix it and so is freebsd-update...
